Course Information

To explore the impact of substance use on children and young people within the family. Identify the key messages in legislation, local and national guidance, and associated documents.

This is a full day course which is interactive and involves individual and group activities, during which participants will be expected to share their skills, knowledge, and expertise.

By the end of the programme -

  • establish a common understanding of what constitutes substance use
  • explore the impact of substance use on children, young people, and their families from their perspective
  • identify the risk and protective factors for children and young people living in families where substance use is an issue, and how this may impact on each stage of their development
  • explore the impact of the Common Assessment Framework in working with substance use in the family
  • understand the legislative framework and guidance
  • explore the Action Plan of 2008-2011 Drugs; Protecting Families and Communities and its impact locally
Course length One day
Target group

Those in regular contact or who have a period of intense but irregular contact with children or young people, or parents and carers, and who may be in a position to identify safeguarding concerns. This includes those which may arise from the use of a common shared assessment.
