Course Title Substance misuse - drug and alcohol awareness
Course Information

To raise awareness of the issues related to drug or alcohol use and the potential implications for the individual, family, and society. This training course will use a variety of experiential and direct teaching methods, as well as small group discussion and card sort exercises to create an active learning environment.

  • to calculate alcohol units and know the recommended drinking limits for adults and young people
  • explore personal and societal beliefs around problem drinking and those deemed to be alcohol dependent
  • briefly consider the effects of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
  • explore what is a drink problem and what is meant by the different levels of risk
  • consider the different signs that may indicate problems at different stages of the ‘continuum of drinking problems’
  • describe the impact on children from parental alcohol misuse
  • identify different types of drugs and know their effects and risks and the changes in drug markets in recent years
  • identify what support and treatment is available and know what services are available locally to refer to
  • be aware of some of the reasons why people may use drugs
  • recognise some of the physical and psychological effects of drug misuse
  • to identify drug paraphernalia and explore what factors may indicate drug misuse
  • identify agencies offering advice, support, and treatment locally
