Council Tax charging order

We can apply to the County Court for a charging order on your property when -

  • all other recovery options have been exhausted
  • you have a legal interest in the property that is subject to a liability order
  • you owe £1000 or more

If a charging order is made and you fail to make payment of the council tax, plus interest, your home may be at risk. A charging order can attract interest payments.

We may apply to the County Court for an order for sale of the property. If the court places a charging order on your property, and the property is sold, you must pay that debt off first before any of the proceeds are given to you.

If you owe us any kind of large debt, it is essential that you contact the Council Tax section and agree a payment plan.

You can do this by Registering for My Council Tax account and accessing the set up special arrangement in the quick links.
