You will need a highway permit if you are placing any of the following on an adopted highway -
- cherry picker
- container
- crane
- hoarding
- mobile elevating work platform (MEWP)
- scissor lift
- skips
- scaffolding (including mobile)
You will also need a highway permit if you are working on a dropped kerb or excavation of the highway.

Skip permits
The cost of a skip permit for one week is £32. We only offer skip permits that last one week.
To request a skip permit, you must be on the approved list of contractors.
Skip permits can take up to 3 working days to be processed. Every effort is made to process these as soon as possible.
Dropped kerb
Dropped kerbs can only be applied for through an approved contractor. We have a list of approved contractors.

Register to be an approved contractor
To enquire about being added to the approved list of contractors, complete our enquiry form.
To be added as an approved skip company we will need to see -
- a waste transfer licence
- proof of public liability insurance (showing at least £10 million in public liability or indemnity)
- a headed letter with company details including contact numbers
To be added to our dropped kerb crossing contractor list we will need to see -
- business details, such as name, address and company number
- qualification(s) to work on the public highway, for example NRSWA accreditation, with at least 1 supervisor
- public indemnity insurance documents, up to a cover level of £10 million
