Course Information

All maintained schools have a statutory responsibility to support the educational outcomes of Looked After and Previously Looked After Children. School Governors have a statutory responsibility to appoint a Designated Teacher for these children. They must make sure they have training and adequate time in which to fulfil their role.

This course aims to equip Designated Teachers to provide the best possible support for these children. This is so that progress is accelerated and they achieve positive outcomes.

This course is aimed at equipping newly appointed DTs or those who would like to refresh their practice with the knowledge and understanding needed to support Looked After and Previously Looked After Children. The course will cover -

  • the statutory duties of the Designated Teacher for both Looked After and Previously Looked After Children as outlined in the statutory guidance for Designated Teachers
  • the role of Virtual School Head and Virtual School
  • information about children looked after and previously looked after
  • supporting staff in mitigating the impact of trauma
  • the Personal Education Plan meeting. Why it is so important, making it effective, and creating SMART targets and actions plans
  • pupil Premium Plus funding and how it may be used
  • admission, attendance, and avoiding suspensions and exclusion
  • effectively reporting outcomes
Course length 1.5 hours
Target group
Newly appointed DTs and experienced DTs who would like to refresh their practice.
