Electronic cigarettes advice to consumers
Electronic cigarettes (eCigarettes) Information is evolving. If you use or are considering using eCigarettes, this page aims to inform and guide you of how to use them safely.
eCigarette products
An eCigarette is an electronic device that contains an eLiquid. Some eCigarettes can only be used once and are disposable. Others have a non-reusable eLiquid cartridge or a refillable eLiquid cartridge or tank.
eLiquids are sold in cartridges or bottles. They are a mixture of substances that may or may not contain nicotine and flavourings.
How eCigarettes work
As the device heats up the eLiquid it creates a fine vapour or mist that the user inhales.
Labelling of eLiquids containing nicotine
Nicotine is classed as a hazardous substance. You can find out if an eLiquid product contains nicotine by checking its label. From May 2016 a new EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) came into force. It controls eCigarettes and eLiquid products containing nicotine. This means the label will also include a -
- list of ingredients
- nicotine content and the dose given
- specific health warning
The product should also come with an information leaflet covering -
- use and storage
- a warning that the product is not recommended for use by young people and non-smokers
Sales of eCigarettes
It is against the law to sell eCigarettes to anyone under the age of 18 years.
Power adapters and charges
There have been many reports of explosions and fires when eCigarettes are being charged. It is important to make sure the charger you use meets the European safety standards. You can check this by looking for the CE mark. We also advise that you –
- only buy eCigarettes and their charges from reputable UK retailers
- only use the charger that came with the eCigarette
- follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully - do not ignore any warnings
- do not leave eCigarettes on charge overnight or when you are not nearby
