Business rates - credit list
Under the findings of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in their Decision Notices FS50619844 and FS50643256, we will no longer publish information in respect of credit balances on Business Rates accounts.
In these decisions, the ICO has determined that such information is exempt from publication under Section 31(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on the grounds that disclosure could result in fraudulent refund claims.
Where there is a genuine need to check a credit balance, individuals will need to provide written authorisation from the liable party. It will need to explicitly state they are working on behalf of the liable party whose credit balance they wish to check.
Whilst this may seem more onerous, it will reduce the likelihood of potential fraud as explained above.
