Archaeology and the environment
We can help with environmental issues relating to the archaeology of an area.
Environmental stewardships
The Humber HER provides archaeological advice to farmers and landowners about land management. Environmental Stewardship applications must consider the historic environment. Contact us for advice about the schemes on offer.
Planting of trees
Tree planting applications must consider the historic environment. The Humber HER provides information to the Forestry Commission about the impact of tree planting. We provide information on the archaeological –
- background of the area
- site specific information
To minimise the impact of root penetration on archaeological sites we recommend –
- tree free areas
- tree free margins
Removal of hedgerows
We provide advice, to the Local Authorities Conservation Teams, about the impact of removing hedgerows.
All planning applications should consider the historic environment. We identify if a hedgerow is historic. The regulations say –
- a historic hedge is one older than the Tithe Maps drawn up in the 1840s
If a removal notice affects a historic hedgerow, we may recommend that works are not carried out.
Some hedgerows date back to the times of enclosure or earlier. We identify surviving features before they are removed. We do not raise objections to the removal of hedgerows that are not of historic importance.
Hedgerows above archaeological sites should be removed with due care and attention. This will protect the archaeological deposits that survive beneath the ground.
Archaeological monitoring may be required
