2024 in review
The development of the Stepney HSA Community-led Partnership
The Partnership are working well and have continued to increase their membership. This ensures that the project continues to be community led. Our getting involved page has ways that you can join the Partnership, and take part in litter picks and other activities.
Action Week - March 2024
‘Action Week’ saw work to improve street edging and gulley cleaning. This was undertaken by the 'Love Your Street' team. They removed graffiti, and placed skips for rubbish throughout the area. They managed to remove 47 tonnes of waste, litter, and unwanted household items.
We also held 7 pop-up sessions to talk to local people about their issues and vision for the area.
Terry Street Footway repairs
March 2024 saw some additional footway works to improve access for pedestrians.
Community Engagement Survey
We undertook a public survey between Monday 20 May and Sunday16 June 2024 to better understand the issues and needs of those that live, work, play and shop in the area. This has helped us to shape the priorities and feed this information into the delivery plan. This includes short, medium, and long-term goals to improve the area.
Partnership approval of the draft vision for the Stepney area
After careful consideration of the community engagement survey results, the Partnership worked closely with a high street expert to complete the draft visioning document and visual representations.
Greenspace funding
The Partnership were successful in securing an additional £500k in funding to contribute to greening projects.
Community Engagement - Little Amal
Stepney HSA Partnership joined the community in welcoming Little Amal to Hull on Sunday 22 September 2024. We were grateful of the opportunity to showcase the vision for the Stepney area. Thanks to everyone that attended and contributed to making this a special day.
Government HSA Team visits Hull
On Friday 15 November 2024 the Stepney HSA Partnership were delighted to welcome our funders to Hull and were grateful of the opportunity to show them around the Stepney area and Sculcoates Park and update them on the vision for the Stepney area.
Stepney gets Partnership approval for a new barrow beat-style streetcare operative
Improving cleanliness, litter and graffiti were some of the top priorities arising from the 2024 survey. Stepney HSA Partnership approved funding for a 12-month fixed term post to appoint a dedicated Streetcare operative to build local relationships and raise cleanliness standards in the area.
The operative will engage with businesses and residents to undertake tasks ranging from -
- small-scale planting
- litter-picking
- rapid graffiti response and paint cover
- community engagement
- weeding
- tree, planter and shrub care
The relationship with the community, developed by a member of staff in a ‘barrow-beat’ role will contribute to the long-term legacy of the project and the face to face understanding of council services. The operative is expected to be in post by the end of January 2025 and this style of approach in Hull is unique to the Stepney area.
Enes Kanter Freedom visits Stepney
In December 2024, the Turkish-American former NBA basketball star made a surprise visit to Hull Summit Education Society and Stepney Station. They also took time out of their busy schedule to visit Sculcoates Park.
Other activity
You may have seen our ‘Stepney HSA’ high-viz jackets out and about doing more regular litter picks in the high street with the help of our volunteers, Hull Summit Education Society, the Youth Justice Team and Love Your Street.
Coming soon
In February 2025 we hope to launch a ‘keep Stepney tidy-style campaign, low-level high street frontage improvements and making preparation for the greening works
Further engagement on the greenspace concept designs and the vision are now live.
There will also be a multicultural event later in the year to celebrate community and diversity in the Stepney area.
