A Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) is issued when a vehicle is believed to have broken parking or traffic rules.
A contravention is the specific rule or regulation that has been broken. It explains the reason why the PCN was issued.
If you receive a PCN, it will include -
- the contravention (what rule was broken)
- information on how to challenge the PCN
- details on how to pay the PCN
You can find a list of contraventions below
- 01 - Parking on single or double yellow lines
- 02 - Parked or unloading in a restricted street where waiting and loading restrictions are in force
- 05 - Parked after the expiry of paid time
- 06 - Parked without clearly displaying a valid pay and display ticket
- 16 - Parked in a permit space without displaying a valid permit
- 21 - Parked in a suspended bay or space or part of a bay or space
- 22 - Re-parked within the same place during restricted hours
- 23 - Parking in a parking place or area not designated for that class of vehicle
- 24 - Not parked correctly within the markings of a bay or space
- 25 - Parked in a Loading place during restricted hours without loading
- 27 - Parked adjacent to dropped footway
- 28 - Parked in a special enforcement area on part of the carriageway raised to meet the level of a footway, cycle track or verge
- 30 - Parked for longer than permitted
- 40 - Parked in a designated disabled persons parking place without displaying a valid disabled persons badge
- 45 - Parked on a taxi rank
- 46 - Stopped where prohibited (on a red route or clearway)
- 47 - Stopped on a restricted bus stop or stand
- 48 - Stopped in a restricted area outside of a school
- 62 - Parked with one or more wheels on any part of an urban road other than a carriageway (footway parking)
- 71 - Parked in an electric vehicles charging place during restricted hours without charging
- 81 - Parked in a restricted area in a car park
- 82 - Parked after the expiry of paid for time
- 83 - Parked in a car park without clearly displaying a valid pay and display ticket or voucher or parking clock
- 85 - Parked in a permit bay without displaying a valid permit
- 86 - Not parked correctly within the markings of a bay or space
- 87 - Parked in a designated disabled persons parking place without clearly displaying a valid disabled person’s badge
- 91 - Parked in a carpark or area not designated for that class of vehicle
- 93 - Parked in a closed carpark
- 99 - Stopped on a pedestrian crossing or crossing marked by zigzags
